What is Ideal Body Weight?
Ideal body weight (IBW) is a target weight range based on height and gender that is associated with the lowest risk of health problems. Several formulas have been developed over the decades, each with slightly different approaches. This calculator uses four of the most widely recognized formulas and provides an average.
About the Formulas
The Devine formula (1974) is the most widely used in clinical practice and was originally intended for calculating drug dosages. The Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) formulas are modifications of the Devine formula. The Hamwi formula (1964) is one of the earliest and is still commonly referenced. All formulas use height as the primary variable.
Important Considerations
Ideal weight formulas provide general guidelines and do not account for body composition, muscle mass, bone density, age, or ethnicity. A muscular person may weigh more than the "ideal" range while being perfectly healthy. Use these results as a reference point, not a definitive target. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalized guidance.
