What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measure of body fat based on your height and weight. It is widely used as a screening tool to identify potential weight problems in adults. While BMI does not directly measure body fat, it correlates with more direct measures of body fat.
BMI Formula
BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters: BMI = kg/m². For imperial units, the formula is: BMI = (weight in pounds × 703) / (height in inches)².
Limitations of BMI
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density, age, sex, or ethnicity. Athletes may have a high BMI due to muscle mass rather than excess fat. Always consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive health assessment.
