Incognito mode is not private browsing. Your ISP sees your traffic. Your employer sees it. Google still records your searches. What Incognito Mode Does — and Where It Stops
Open any browser in incognito or private mode and it creates an isolated session: no cookies carried in from previous sessions, no history saved after you close the window, no form data retained. That is its entire scope. The isolation is local, not network-level.
When you visit any site in incognito, your browser still sends DNS queries your ISP can read. Your traffic still routes through your network connection. If you're on a corporate network, the company firewall still logs your activity. If you're signed into Google and search on Google, Google still attributes that search to your account. Incognito tells you "your activity might still be visible to websites you visit, your employer or school, or your internet service provider" in the opening tab — that disclaimer is accurate.
Brave Browser: Fingerprint Blocking Built In
Brave is a Chromium-based browser with fingerprint randomization, tracker blocking, and ad blocking enabled by default — no extensions required. It uses the same engine as Chrome, so compatibility with sites built for Chrome is identical.
The standout feature is Shields: Brave's built-in blocker that handles cross-site trackers, fingerprinting scripts, and third-party cookies by default on every site. Brave Shields can be temporarily lowered per-site if a site breaks — click the lion icon in the address bar, toggle Shields off, reload. The site then behaves as it would in Chrome.

Firefox + uBlock Origin: Maximum Control
Firefox with uBlock Origin installed is the highest-control free privacy setup available. uBlock Origin is an open-source content blocker that runs on filter lists — maintained databases of known tracking domains, advertising servers, and malicious URLs. It blocks at the network request level before content loads, not after.
Setup steps: Install Firefox from mozilla.org. Open the Firefox Add-ons page (about:addons in the URL bar), search for "uBlock Origin" by Raymond Hill. Install it. On first run, open uBlock Origin's dashboard by clicking its icon and selecting the gear icon.
Filter lists to enable beyond defaults: In the Filter Lists tab, expand the Privacy section and enable AdGuard Privacy and AdGuard Tracking Protection. Expand Annoyances and enable Fanboy's Social Blocking List, which removes Facebook Like buttons and Twitter share widgets that track you across sites even if you do not click them. Do not enable Malware Domains — it duplicates EasyList protection and adds load time.
Firefox also supports Strict Mode Enhanced Tracking Protection natively (Settings → Privacy and Security → Enhanced Tracking Protection → Strict). Enable this before installing uBlock Origin. Together, they block the vast majority of third-party tracking.
The caveat: some sites break under strict blocking. uBlock Origin's element picker lets you selectively allow specific blocked content per site. The learning curve is steeper than Brave, but control is greater.
DuckDuckGo Browser: Mobile-First Private Search
DuckDuckGo's mobile browser (iOS and Android) combines private search, tracker blocking, and a "Fire Button" that erases all tabs, cookies, and browsing data with a single tap. It is the simplest private browsing setup on mobile — no extensions to configure, no settings to harden.
The Fire Button sits in the bottom toolbar. Tap it, confirm, and the app clears everything. Cookie banners are auto-dismissed on supported sites. Email Protection (a free DuckDuckGo feature) provides a @duck.com forwarding address that strips tracking pixels from emails before forwarding them to your real inbox.
DuckDuckGo's desktop browser is available for Windows and macOS in beta. Features are similar to the mobile version, though the filter list coverage is less mature than Firefox + uBlock Origin.
DNS-over-HTTPS in Firefox: Specific Steps
DNS-over-HTTPS encrypts the first step of every web request — the lookup that translates a domain name into an IP address. Without DoH, your ISP's DNS servers process every lookup in plain text and can log every domain you visit.
To enable DoH in Firefox: Open Firefox. Go to Settings (the three-line menu, then Settings). Scroll to Network Settings at the bottom and click "Settings". At the bottom of the dialog, find "Enable DNS over HTTPS". Check the box. Set Provider to "Cloudflare" (1.1.1.1) or "NextDNS" for malware blocking. Click OK.
Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 does not log DNS queries per its privacy policy and has been independently audited. NextDNS blocks malicious domains at the DNS level — useful as a free lightweight malware filter with no antivirus software required. NextDNS's free tier processes up to 300,000 queries per month before falling back to unfiltered DNS.
On Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Security → scroll to "Use secure DNS" → select "With: Cloudflare (1.1.1.1)". Same protection, same provider options.

Honest Caveat: What These Tools Do Not Fix
Every tool here reduces tracking from advertisers, data brokers, and ISPs reading DNS traffic. None of them hides your activity from the sites you actually visit — Google still sees your Gmail activity, your bank sees your logins, and any site you authenticate to tracks your session.
Against targeted surveillance (law enforcement with a court order, a state-level threat actor), none of these tools provide meaningful protection. Tor Browser is the relevant option there, and it comes with significant speed and compatibility trade-offs.
For most people — the goal of not being tracked by ad networks, reducing data broker profiling, and blocking fingerprint scripts — Brave or Firefox with uBlock Origin and DoH enabled covers the threat model well and costs nothing.
